Zimbabwe Pushes for Faster BRICS Entry
In remarks to a media outlet, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira, revealed that Harare has reached out to existing BRICS nations to accelerate its acceptance into the group.
“Zimbabwe is ready to integrate more deeply into the global community, and joining blocs such as BRICS is very important for us in expanding our economic involvement and integrating Zimbabwe into the global economy,” Murwira stated, as quoted by the outlet.
Murwira explained that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has assigned him the responsibility of spearheading Zimbabwe’s outreach to BRICS member countries.
He added that Zimbabwe also submitted an application last year to join the New Development Bank (NDB), which serves as the bloc’s financial institution, the report noted.
The foreign minister had previously addressed the matter in March, indicating that Zimbabwe was seeking BRICS membership and confirming that the process had reached the application phase.
Separately, President Mnangagwa discussed Harare’s ambition to join the bloc with Russian President Vladimir Putin during meetings held in St. Petersburg in June 2024.
Zimbabwe formally lodged its application to become a BRICS member on March 7.
